Ringfort (Rath), Carrowbrickeen, Co. Sligo

What draws the eye at Carrowbrickeen is not drama but precision.

Sitting on a low, broad rise in gently undulating pasture in County Sligo, this earthwork rath, a type of ringfort built primarily from banked earth and ditches rather than stone, preserves enough of its original geometry to reward a careful look. The enclosed area measures roughly 26 metres across, ringed by an earthen bank about five metres wide and still standing nearly a metre high internally. A fosse, the external ditch that once reinforced the enclosure's defensive or social boundary, runs from the south-southwest around to the northwest, six metres wide and originally some 1.4 metres deep; further around, from northwest to east-northeast, it has been infilled, though the ground still betrays the depression.

The entrance survives too. A gap in the bank at the south-southeast, roughly four metres across, is accompanied by a causeway that would have carried the original threshold across the fosse, the standard arrangement for a rath of this kind. Two later breaks in the bank, a narrow one to the northeast and another to the east, are clearly modern intrusions rather than original features, and a small quarry hole just inside the eastern bank suggests that at some point the site was mined, however modestly, for material. The most puzzling detail lies at the north side of the interior: a crescent-shaped raised platform, twelve metres long east to west and five metres wide, defined on its southern edge by a scarped, deliberately cut slope. Its function is genuinely unclear. It is too substantial to be incidental and too irregular in shape to read simply as a structural remnant, and no firm explanation has been settled on.
