Ringfort (Rath), Carrowkeel, Co. Sligo

On a low rise in the rolling pasture of County Sligo, an oval enclosure sits at a point where three townlands meet: Carrowkeel, Lugbaun, and Lismacbryan.

That triple boundary is itself worth pausing over. Townland edges in Ireland often preserve the ghost-lines of much older territorial divisions, and a ringfort positioned precisely at such a junction raises quiet questions about how early medieval communities understood ownership, neutral ground, and the edges of things.

A ringfort, at its most basic, was an enclosed farmstead of the early medieval period, typically defined by one or more earthen banks and ditches encircling a domestic space. This one is oval in plan, measuring roughly 25 metres northeast to southwest and 23.5 metres northwest to southeast, dimensions that place it comfortably within the ordinary domestic scale of such sites. The 1913 edition of the Ordnance Survey six-inch map recorded it clearly, though what survives on the ground today tells a more complicated story. Along one arc, the defining feature is simply a modern field boundary, the same boundary that separates Carrowkeel from Lugbaun. Along the rest, a tumbled spread of stones about three metres wide might at first suggest a cashel wall, the kind of dry-stone enclosure more common in the west of Ireland, but it more likely represents a collapsed later field wall rather than any original prehistoric or early medieval structure. There is no fosse, the encircling ditch that typically accompanies earthen raths, and no original entrance can be made out.
