Ringfort (Rath), Carrowmacrory, Co. Sligo

In a field at Carrowmacrory, a low ridge running north to south carries something easy to walk past without quite registering what it is.

A raised circular platform, roughly thirty-one metres across at its widest, sits at the break of slope where the ground begins its descent towards a river around a hundred metres to the east. This is a rath, the Irish term for a ringfort, the kind of enclosed farmstead that was built and occupied across Ireland from roughly the early medieval period onwards. Thousands survive in various states, and most share the same basic logic: a circular earthen bank defining a domestic space, the interior raised slightly above the surrounding ground to improve drainage and visibility.

At Carrowmacrory, the bank that once enclosed the platform survives only in fragments. On the western side it stands to an external height of around 0.9 metres; on the eastern side it reaches closer to 1.6 metres, a difference that reflects how the ground behaves here, falling away more steeply on the river-facing side. The bank itself is around five metres wide where it can still be measured. Inside the enclosure, the eastern half of the platform slopes downward from west to east, following the natural contour of the ridge beneath. There are several depressions and areas of disturbance within the interior, the kinds of irregularities that can suggest later interference, subsided features, or simply centuries of agricultural activity working over the surface. The most likely position of the original entrance appears to have been on the south-western side, where the difference in height between the interior ground and the exterior is at its smallest, making passage in and out most practicable.

The site sits in pasture, which means the earthworks, fragmentary as they are, remain visible as a slight but distinct rise in the field. The eastern prospect, opening towards the river below, gives a sense of why this particular ridge was chosen as a place to settle.
