Ringfort (Rath), Carrowreagh, Co. Galway

In a field in Carrowreagh, Co. Galway, a circle in the earth is slowly losing its argument with time.

What survives of this early medieval enclosure is only partial: a curving bank of earth and stone that traces an arc from the south-east around through the south and on to the north-west, with a gentler slope picking up the line from the north-east back to the south-east. The full circuit, around 34 metres in diameter, is no longer readable on the ground. Farm buildings erected across the northern side have erased whatever once stood there, leaving the rath to communicate its age only in fragments.

A rath is a ringfort, a type of enclosed farmstead built throughout Ireland roughly between the fourth and twelfth centuries. Thousands survive across the country in varying states of preservation, some with dramatic earthworks, others so reduced that only aerial photography or a trained eye can pick them out at all. This one sits towards the latter end of that spectrum. Around its southern arc, faint traces of an external fosse, a defensive ditch dug to reinforce the bank inside it, are still just visible, hinting at a structure that was once more deliberately fortified than the surviving earthwork alone would suggest. The undulating pastureland around it is characteristic of this part of Galway, and the rath would have sat within a working agricultural landscape then much as it does now, its enclosing bank marking off a household and its animals from the wider world.
