A rath is an enclosed farmstead, typically of the early medieval period, defined by one or more earthen banks and ditches, and there are thousands of them across Ireland. What makes any individual example worth attention is usually in the detail, and this one repays a close look at how its builders worked with the landscape rather than against it.

The enclosure measures approximately 46.6 metres north to south and 45.2 metres east to west, making it a reasonably substantial example. Its builders oriented the interior to take advantage of the higher ground on the western side, which slopes gently down toward the north-east, east, and south-east. The earthen bank survives best on the western half, where it reaches around four metres wide and stands just over half a metre above the interior. On the southern side, where the natural ground falls away, the builders compensated by building the scarp higher, around 0.9 metres externally, to maintain a consistent defensive or enclosing profile. It is a small but telling piece of engineering. On the eastern side, rising ground outside the rath restricts the views in that direction, which may partly explain why the likely original entrance, a five-metre break in the enclosure, faces south-east rather than directly east. A scattering of hawthorn bushes now marks the perimeter, growing along the line of the bank as they so often do on earthworks of this kind, where the undisturbed ground gives them purchase.
