Ringfort (Rath), Castlenageeha, Co. Mayo

Sitting in open pasture on a low ridge in County Mayo, this ringfort rewards close attention precisely because it is asymmetrical in a way that reveals deliberate thinking.

A rath is an early medieval enclosed farmstead, typically circular, defined by an earthen bank and an outer ditch known as a fosse. Most appear broadly uniform when you walk their circuit, but here the southern arc is noticeably more built up than the north, the external height reaching 2.2 metres on that side compared with just 0.8 metres opposite. The reason is practical: the ground falls away naturally to the south towards a narrow strip of low, damp land, and the builders compensated by raising the bank higher there to keep the interior level. It is a small engineering decision, but one that makes the whole enclosure legible as a considered piece of work rather than a routine earthwork.

The rath measures roughly 24 metres east to west and 26 metres north to south, and the earthen bank still carries stones protruding from its top and outer slope. At the western side, stones emerging from the base of the bank suggest the remnants of a kerb, indicating that the structure was once more formally faced. The fosse, the defensive ditch outside the bank, survives unevenly: around the south-south-east it is barely a depression in the ground, but between the south-west and west it becomes a well-defined flat-bottomed cut, nearly three metres wide and 1.3 metres deep, ending in a rounded terminal at the west. Two narrow breaks in the bank, one at the south-east and one at the west, appear to be the result of farm stock wearing through the earthwork over many generations rather than original features. The likeliest position for the original entrance is the east, where a north-south field wall has truncated the bank; an old farm track runs alongside that wall and directly over the line of the fosse, quietly erasing what would once have been the formal threshold of the enclosure.
