You will not find a bank, a ditch, or any earthwork rising from the ground, yet the site has been mapped, photographed from the air, and catalogued. What remains is essentially the ghost of an enclosure, legible only in archives rather than in the landscape itself.

A rath, as ringforts of this earthen type are generally known in Ireland, was typically a roughly circular enclosure defined by one or more banks and ditches, used in the early medieval period as a farmstead or defended homestead. This particular example appears clearly on Ordnance Survey maps from 1841 to 1842, drawn as a distinct circular feature in the fields of north Kerry. By the time the 1898 edition was surveyed, something had already begun to happen: the enclosure had been absorbed into the surrounding field system, its banks folded into the network of agricultural boundaries on all sides except to the west. That partial survival, visible in the later map, suggests a gradual process of clearance and reuse rather than a single deliberate act of demolition. By 1977, when the Geological Survey of Ireland captured the area in aerial photographs, the site could still be identified from above. Today, no surface trace survives at all.

The pattern is a familiar one across Ireland, where tens of thousands of raths once dotted the countryside and a significant proportion have been lost to agriculture, drainage improvement, and land consolidation over the past two centuries. What makes this site quietly interesting is precisely how well its disappearance is documented, each stage of erasure caught in a different medium, from the careful ink lines of Victorian surveyors to mid-twentieth-century aerial film.
