Ringfort (Rath), Clashganniff, Co. Limerick

A causeway leading into an earthwork that has been quietly swallowing itself for centuries is an odd thing to find in the middle of a Limerick pasture.

At Clashganniff, a ringfort sits on an east-facing slope just below the brow of a low ridge, its circular enclosure still legible in the landscape even as vegetation has done its best to obscure the details. A ringfort, or rath, is an early medieval enclosed settlement, typically dating from roughly 500 to 1000 AD, built to protect a farmstead and its inhabitants. This one follows the familiar form: a roughly circular area of about thirty metres in diameter, drawn in by an earthen bank and a surrounding fosse, the fosse being the external ditch that once made the bank more formidable.

The bank itself survives in reasonable condition, particularly towards the north-north-east, where it reaches an external height of around 2.4 metres and an internal height of 1.75 metres. The fosse runs to about two metres wide and 0.6 metres deep where it is best preserved, and at the south-east a seam of exposed limestone breaks the surface within it, a small geological detail that speaks to the underlying character of this part of Limerick's terrain. The entrance, at the western side, is 6.15 metres wide and retains its causeway crossing the fosse, the original threshold of whatever household once sheltered within. The site was recorded and compiled by Denis Power, with the survey uploaded in August 2011.

The fort sits in working pasture, so access may depend on the landowner's goodwill and the season. The western entrance and causeway are the clearest features to seek out on approach, offering the most readable sense of how the enclosure was originally structured. The interior is heavily overgrown, which makes the bank visible from outside easier to read than anything within. The exposed limestone in the fosse at the south-east is a small but curious detail worth looking for if the vegetation allows. Sturdy footwear is advisable, and the ridge above provides enough elevation to make the circular earthwork comprehensible as a shape in the field.
