Ringfort (Rath), Clashgortmore, Co. Limerick

Somewhere in the rolling pasture of County Limerick, a near-perfect circle sits quietly in the grass, its edges just pronounced enough to catch the eye of anyone who knows what to look for.

The site at Clashgortmore is a rath, the Irish term for a ringfort, which was a type of enclosed farmstead typically built during the early medieval period, roughly between the fifth and twelfth centuries. Thousands of them survive across Ireland, yet each one carries its own particular character, shaped by the land it occupies and the centuries of growth that have since reclaimed it.

This example, recorded and compiled by Denis Power, presents as a circular area of approximately twenty-two metres in diameter, defined by a scarped edge, meaning the ground has been cut or shaped to create a distinct drop, here standing roughly eighty-five centimetres high and just over three metres wide. The interior dips downward toward the centre, a feature that may reflect original construction, settlement activity, or simply the slow subsidence of undisturbed ground over many centuries. The site sits in low-lying, gently undulating pasture, the kind of quiet agricultural landscape that tends not to draw attention to itself, which is perhaps why ringforts in such settings are so frequently passed without a second glance.

Access to the interior is largely blocked by a dense growth of furze and briars, with only the north-western edge offering any real foothold. A wire fence was erected just outside the base of the scarp, enclosing the site and marking it off from the surrounding farmland. Visitors approaching on foot should expect the exterior to be more legible than the interior, the raised scarp being the clearest physical evidence of the structure from ground level. The furze, while frustrating from an exploratory point of view, is itself a familiar sight on Irish ringforts, where centuries of undisturbed ground have allowed scrub to take hold in ways that surrounding farmland would never permit.
