Ringforts
Scattered across the Irish countryside in their thousands, ringforts are among the most common archaeological features in the landscape, yet each one carries its own quiet weight of history.
The example at Clenagh in County Clare belongs to a category known as a rath, an earthen ringfort typically consisting of one or more circular banks and ditches that once enclosed a family farmstead during the early medieval period, roughly between the fifth and twelfth centuries. At a time when the nuclear family rather than the village was the basic unit of rural life, these enclosures served as both a practical boundary for livestock and a marker of social status.
