Ringfort (Rath), Cloghatrida, Co. Limerick

Some places earn their place in the archaeological record precisely because they have ceased to exist.

At Cloghatrida in County Limerick, a ringfort, or rath, a type of circular earthen enclosure used as a farmstead during the early medieval period, once occupied a gentle south-westerly slope descending towards a river valley. It is the kind of modest, workaday monument that once dotted the Irish countryside in its thousands. This one, however, is gone. Not ruined, not eroded, but levelled, leaving nothing visible at ground level for anyone who goes looking.

The site was recorded on the Ordnance Survey six-inch map of 1841, where it appeared as an embanked circular enclosure measuring approximately twenty metres in diameter. That survey, carried out in the years before the Famine, captured a landscape still holding onto features that would not survive the following century and a half of agricultural change. When Denis Power compiled his inspection notes, uploaded in August 2011, there was no trace of the monument left to see. A recently constructed farm passage, running roughly along the line of a removed field boundary, had clipped the southern edge of the site, the final indignity in what had clearly been a gradual erasure.

There is, in one sense, little practical reason to visit Cloghatrida in search of this particular monument. The pasture shows nothing; the earthwork is gone. What the site offers instead is a quietly instructive lesson in how the archaeological record works, or fails to. The 1841 map remains the primary evidence that anything was ever here, and that map is freely accessible through the OSI historical mapping portal online. For anyone with an interest in how ordinary rural settlements have been quietly removed from the landscape, comparing that nineteenth-century survey sheet with the current terrain is, in its own way, more revealing than a well-preserved site might be.
