Ringfort (Rath), Cloghaundine, Co. Clare

In the pastureland of Cloghaundine in County Clare, a circular patch of ground roughly thirty to thirty-four metres across refuses to be entirely forgotten, despite the fact that no Ordnance Survey map has ever bothered to record it.

It does not appear as a named monument, a marked enclosure, or even a dotted outline. Its existence is legible only from above, in aerial and satellite imagery, where a faint circular anomaly in the grass hints at something that once stood here and has been slowly, incompletely erased.

A ringfort, known in Irish as a rath, was a type of enclosed farmstead common throughout early medieval Ireland, typically defined by one or more circular earthen banks and ditches. Thousands survive across the country in varying states of preservation, but many more have been quietly dismantled by centuries of agricultural improvement. At Cloghaundine, intermittent curving low banks are discernible on orthophotographs from 2004 to 2006, appearing to extend beyond a field boundary that runs roughly north-north-west to south-south-east across the eastern quadrant of the site. The ground to the east of that boundary has been levelled entirely. What remains on the western side is an unreclaimed circular area, visible on satellite imagery from 2011 to 2013 and again on mapping data from 2012 to 2018, suggesting the earthwork has not been fully ploughed out, even if it is no longer legible at ground level in any obvious way.

What makes the site quietly compelling is precisely its ambiguity. It is not confirmed, not mapped, not officially classified beyond a tentative identification. The evidence is circumstantial but consistent, the kind of pattern that aerial survey has used across Ireland to locate monuments that local memory and ground-level inspection have long since lost track of. The eastern portion is gone. The western curve persists, for now, in pasture.
