The rath at Clondalever in County Westmeath is a different proposition. Its oval interior measures approximately 46 metres across on its longest axis, it is enclosed by two concentric earth and stone banks rather than one, and between those banks lies a shallow external fosse, the term for a defensive ditch. The whole structure sits on a steep south-east facing slope of a prominent ridge running west-north-west to east-south-east, positioned to command wide views across the landscape to the south, south-west, and west. That combination of unusual scale, double enclosure, and deliberate siting makes it a notably uncommon example of its type.

The inner bank is the more imposing of the two, reaching up to two metres in height at its northern arc, which is where it has survived in best condition. The fosse and outer bank are most legible on the southern and western sides. At the south-east, a two-metre entrance gap breaks the inner bank, the original point of access. The interior is far from level, sloping steeply from north-east to south-west, and in the eastern quadrant the ground holds the faint outline of a rectangular house site, a trace of whoever once lived within these walls. Some damage is visible in the south-west quadrant, where the perimeter has been quarried away, a reminder of how many such sites have been eaten into over centuries by the practical demands of agriculture and construction. A second ringfort lies roughly 360 metres to the east, suggesting this stretch of ridge in Westmeath was once a more densely settled landscape than it appears today.
