Ringfort (Rath), Clongeen, Co. Wexford

Some ancient sites announce themselves with earthworks you can walk around, touch, and photograph.

Others exist primarily as shadows, visible only from the air, and only then under the right conditions. The rath at Clongeen in County Wexford belongs to this second, quieter category. What survives is a cropmark, the faint outline left in growing vegetation when buried features alter soil moisture and drainage beneath. In dry summers, differences in crop colour and height betray what lies underneath, and from an aerial vantage point a circular form roughly forty metres in diameter becomes legible against the surrounding land.

A rath, also known as a ringfort, is a roughly circular enclosure typically defined by one or more earthen banks and ditches, and was the dominant form of rural settlement in early medieval Ireland, used broadly between the fifth and twelfth centuries. The Clongeen example sits on a slight north-to-south spur of land, a modest but deliberate elevation of the kind that was routinely chosen for such enclosures. Its defining feature, the fosse, meaning the encircling ditch, survives only faintly, and the absence of any obvious surface expression is why it went largely unnoticed until aerial photography brought it into focus. The site sits in that large category of ringforts that were never built in stone or substantially earthed up, and so have gradually dissolved back into the agricultural landscape around them.
