Ringfort (Rath), Clonyn, Co. Westmeath

A raised circular platform sitting quietly in reclaimed grassland in County Westmeath, this rath in Clonyn is unusual for the degree of complexity still legible in its earthworks.

Most ringforts, the enclosed farmsteads of early medieval Ireland typically dating from roughly the fifth to the twelfth centuries, survive as a single bank and ditch. This one retains two concentric earthen banks with a deep fosse, the term for the ditch or trench cut between them, giving it a profile associated with higher-status enclosures. A site with doubled defences of this kind was likely the home of someone of considerable local standing, a petty lord or prosperous farmer commanding both labour and resources.

The monument sits on a natural rise, which would have made it conspicuous across the surrounding landscape, and that relationship between elevation and visibility still holds. The circular interior measures approximately 37 metres north to south and 35 metres east to west, making it a substantial enclosure. An entrance gap roughly 2.7 metres wide cuts through the inner bank on the eastern side, aligned with a causeway of similar width crossing the fosse, the standard arrangement that allowed controlled access while preserving the defensive logic of the earthworks. The outer bank has been largely levelled on the eastern to southern arc, likely through agricultural activity over the centuries, but the inner bank and fosse remain legible. Perhaps most quietly interesting is the slight platform visible near the centre of the interior, interpreted as a possible hut site, a trace of whatever domestic structure once occupied the enclosed space. A stream runs roughly east to west about 80 metres to the north, close enough to have served the original inhabitants without compromising the raised and defensive character of the site itself.
