Ringfort (Rath), Clooneen, Co. Sligo

On a gently east-facing slope in County Sligo, a slightly raised circular earthwork sits quietly in pasture, its defensive layers still legible beneath centuries of grass.

What makes this rath worth a second look is not its scale but its structure: a concentric arrangement of bank, berm, and fosse that speaks to a methodical approach to enclosure, even if the people who built it left no names behind.

Raths, or ringforts, were the most common form of rural settlement in early medieval Ireland, typically dating from roughly the sixth to the twelfth century. They functioned primarily as enclosed farmsteads, the banks and ditches protecting livestock and family rather than serving any grand military purpose. This example at Clooneen is relatively modest in diameter at nineteen metres across, but its layout is layered. An inner bank of earth and stone, some five metres wide, encloses the central area. Beyond that lies a flat berm, a level shelf of ground roughly four metres wide, which is itself bounded by a second, outer bank. Outside that outer bank runs a fosse, a cut ditch nearly five metres wide and half a metre deep. What is unusual here is that this arrangement is not uniform around the circuit. To the north-east and east-north-east, the outer bank and berm disappear entirely, and the fosse is absent across a broader arc from west-north-west to east-north-east. Whether this reflects deliberate design, later erosion, or agricultural disturbance over the centuries is not clear. The original entrance has also been lost, leaving no obvious clue as to how people once moved in and out. A drystone field wall, running roughly west-south-west to east-north-east, now bisects the interior slightly north of centre, a reminder that the land was put back to agricultural use long after the rath's original function was forgotten.
