Ringfort (Rath), Cloonmore, Co. Clare

In the townland of Cloonmore in County Clare, a ringfort sits in the landscape, its earthen banks tracing a circular boundary that has outlasted the people who raised it by well over a thousand years.

These enclosures, known in Irish as raths, were the standard form of rural settlement across early medieval Ireland, roughly from the fifth to the twelfth century. A typical rath consisted of one or more concentric banks and ditches enclosing a farmstead, the bank built from the spoil thrown up when the ditch was cut. They were not primarily military structures, despite the solidity of their construction; they marked out a family's territory, protected livestock from wolves and raiders, and signalled social standing in a world where such things were communicated through the shape of the ground beneath your feet. Ireland still has tens of thousands of them, yet each one represents a specific household, a specific moment, a specific decision about where to build a life.

Cloonmore itself is a small townland in Clare, a county whose geology and land use have helped preserve earthworks that elsewhere were ploughed flat during the agricultural intensification of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. The Burren to the north and the broader pattern of smaller, rockier fields across much of Clare meant that heavy tillage never swept through quite as comprehensively as in the midlands or south Leinster, and many raths survived simply because the ground around them was never worth the effort of levelling. Whether the Cloonmore example retains its full circuit of banks, whether it has been disturbed by later field boundaries or tree growth, and what its precise dimensions might be, are details that the available record does not currently supply.
