Ringfort (Rath), Cloontarriff, Co. Mayo

What catches the eye at Cloontarriff is not dramatic stonework or soaring earthworks, but something quieter: faint parallel ridges running across the grass inside an ancient circular enclosure, the faded memory of crops grown by people who also, at some point, stopped farming here altogether.

The same ridge-and-furrow pattern continues outside the earthwork into the surrounding field, which suggests that cultivation here did not respect the boundary of the rath, either because the enclosure was already long-abandoned when the ridges were made, or because daily agricultural life simply carried on around and across it.

A rath is an earthen ringfort, typically dating from the early medieval period in Ireland, roughly the fifth to twelfth centuries, and constructed as an enclosed farmstead for a single family or small community. The example at Cloontarriff sits on a low hill amid pasture and bog, a position offering modest elevation and a view over Carrownamallaght, also marked as Rowans Lough on older Ordnance Survey maps, which lies just twenty-five metres to the south-west. A second small lake to the east has since dried up, leaving only boggy ground, and Cullentragh Lough sits roughly seven hundred metres to the south-east. The rath itself is sub-circular in plan, measuring about thirty metres across, and defined by a scarp between ninety centimetres and just over a metre high, which retains a low internal rim. The original entrance has not been firmly identified, though the point where the enclosing scarp dips lowest, on the east-south-east side, is the most likely candidate. A farm track runs along the north-east and eastern edges, leading away to a derelict farmstead to the north-west, a detail that quietly extends the site's story of habitation and eventual abandonment across several different eras.
