A rath, the Irish term for a roughly circular earthen enclosure that once served as a farmstead and status marker during the early medieval period, typically announces itself through a raised bank, a surrounding ditch, and the quiet drama of an interior platform. Here, almost none of that remains above ground, and what does survive does so only partially, on one side.

The enclosure measures approximately 39 metres on its north to south axis, making it a fairly modest example of the type. A slight inner scarp, the eroded remnant of what would once have been a more substantial bank, is still traceable along the eastern edge. Moving around from the north-east through east to south, the ground also retains a fosse, the ditch that in a more intact rath would have encircled the whole structure, along with the outer bank beyond it. Elsewhere, the surface shows nothing. The rest has been levelled or eroded entirely. The site sits roughly 230 metres south-west of a separate ringfort, which means this was not an isolated farmstead in a cleared landscape but one of at least two enclosures in relatively close proximity, a reminder that early medieval settlement in Ireland was often more clustered and densely organised than the surviving monuments suggest.

Because so little of this rath projects above the surrounding terrain, there is not much a visitor could read from the ground without prior knowledge of what to look for. The partial eastern scarp and the arc of fosse and bank running from north-east to south represent the only legible fragments, and even these require a careful eye and reasonable ground conditions to distinguish from ordinary field undulations.
