Ringfort (Rath), Coolbane, Co. Kerry

Somebody, at some point, decided that the southern bank of an ancient ringfort was a perfectly reasonable place to build a lime kiln.

The logic is not hard to follow: a raised earthen bank offers ready material, and convenience tends to win over reverence. But the result is one of those quietly telling collisions that Irish fields throw up from time to time, where centuries of different land use pile on top of one another without ceremony.

The rath at Coolbane sits on the break of a gentle south-facing slope in County Kerry, its circular enclosure measuring roughly 40 metres across. A rath is an earthen ringfort, typically an enclosed farmstead of the early medieval period, defined by a bank and a fosse, the shallow ditch dug to provide material for the bank itself. Here the arrangement survives in some detail: an inner earthen bank, an intervening fosse, and an outer bank running along the ENE to ESE arc. The entrance, about four metres wide, faces WNW. The interior dips inward from the bank toward a level central area, the characteristic bowl shape that results from the original construction. By the time the Ordnance Survey mapped the area in 1846 on their six-inch sheets, trees were growing along the northern and southern arcs of the bank, suggesting the enclosure had long since passed out of any defensive or domestic use and was simply part of the landscape. The lime kiln built into the southern bank belongs to that same post-medieval phase of repurposing, when a structure used for burning limestone to produce agricultural lime was inserted into whatever elevated ground was available. About 120 metres to the east lies a children's burial ground, a cillín, the kind of unconsecrated ground where unbaptised infants were traditionally interred, separate from the parish cemetery.
