Ringfort (Rath), Coolmeen, Co. Clare

In the townland of Coolmeen, in the west Clare landscape of low drumlin country and hedged fields running down towards the Shannon Estuary, there sits a ringfort, locally known as a rath.

These circular enclosures, defined by one or more earthen banks and ditches, were the typical farmstead of early medieval Ireland, occupied roughly between the fifth and twelfth centuries. Tens of thousands once dotted the island; several thousand survive in some form today, though many exist only as faint cropmarks or slight rises in a ploughed field. The one at Coolmeen is among those that have not yet attracted detailed published attention, which in itself says something about the sheer density of such monuments across the Irish countryside.

Raths were not defensive structures in any military sense, despite their enclosing banks. They marked out a family's territory, kept livestock in and predators out, and signalled status through the number of surrounding earthen rings, a single bank being the most common, a triple-banked example suggesting considerable wealth or rank. In Clare, as elsewhere, these sites frequently accumulated folklore over the centuries, becoming associated with the sí, the supernatural inhabitants of the otherworld, which offered them a kind of informal protection long after their original function was forgotten. Whether the Coolmeen example retains any such local tradition is not recorded, but the pattern is common enough across the county to be worth bearing in mind when reading the surrounding landscape.
