Ringfort (Rath), Corimla, Co. Mayo

On a ridge above the Brusna river in County Mayo, a grass-covered earthwork sits quietly in improved pasture, commanding long views along the river valley to the north-east and south-west.

What makes this particular rath worth pausing over is less its setting than its quiet record of erasure. A rath is an Early Medieval Irish ringfort, typically a raised circular enclosure defined by an earthen bank and used as a farmstead and place of protection. This one at Corimla was still fully circular when the Ordnance Survey mapped it in 1837 and 1838. By the 1922 edition of the same map series, it was recorded as penannular, a crescent shape open to the north, meaning that in the intervening decades a significant portion of the monument had simply disappeared.

The cause of that disappearance is written into the ground itself. A section measuring roughly 15 metres east to west and between six and seven metres north to south has been quarried away at the northern end, to a depth of around 1.2 metres. Quarrying of this kind, extracting stone or gravel from whatever lay conveniently underfoot, was a common fate for earthworks throughout the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, when agricultural improvement and infrastructure work created steady demand for local material. What remains of the bank survives reasonably well on the eastern and southern sides, where it still stands to an external height of around 1.7 metres and retains a width of some 3.4 metres. At the southern edge, the exterior slope has been cut vertically for a length of 4 metres, a neat, purposeful cut that speaks to the same utilitarian attitude that took the northern section entirely. The interior of the enclosure is level, and the whole is grass covered, sitting on the ridge with the ground falling away for roughly 80 metres down to the river below.
