Ringfort (Rath), Cormick, Co. Galway

On a low ridge rising out of the rolling grassland of County Galway, an oval earthwork sits quietly in the landscape, its dimensions modest but its age considerable.

This is a rath, the commonest form of early medieval enclosure in Ireland, typically built between roughly 500 and 1200 AD as a defended farmstead for a single family or small community. A rath consists of a raised earthen bank, or rampart, enclosing a roughly circular or oval area, with a fosse, meaning a ditch, dug around the outside to provide both the material for the bank and an additional barrier. The example at Cormick measures 33 metres north to south and 23 metres east to west, making it a moderately sized specimen of its type.

The earthwork survives in fair condition. The defining bank is still legible around the perimeter, and the external fosse remains visible along the northern arc, from north-north-west through north to north-east. That partial preservation is not unusual; fosses on the southern and western sides of raths frequently silt up or are levelled over centuries of agricultural use, while the northern sections, less convenient for ploughing or drainage, tend to endure. Two gaps, one at the north and one at the south, are considered modern intrusions rather than original entranceways, suggesting the enclosure has been breached at some point to allow passage of livestock or machinery. The original entrance, as with most raths, would have been a carefully constructed gap in the bank, possibly with a timber gate.

The site sits within the undulating grassland typical of this part of Galway, where the subtle rises and dips of the terrain make these ancient enclosures easy to miss unless you are looking from the right angle. The northern fosse, being the best-preserved section, is the clearest indicator of the original design, and approaching from that direction gives the fullest sense of how the earthwork would once have commanded its ridge.
