Ringfort (Rath), Creagh, Co. Longford

On a north-north-west-facing slope in the pastureland of Creagh, Co. Longford, a broad circular rise in the ground marks the site of an early medieval ringfort.

The feature is subtle enough that a casual glance might read it as nothing more than a gentle undulation in the field, yet its dimensions tell a different story: roughly 63 metres across, it is a substantial enclosure by any measure.

A ringfort, or rath, is the most common archaeological monument type in Ireland, typically a circular area of domestic settlement enclosed by one or more earthen banks, used throughout the early medieval period roughly between the fifth and twelfth centuries. This example retains its low bank of earth and stone along with a shallow external fosse, the term for a ditch that would originally have sat just outside the bank, reinforcing the boundary. A scarp, essentially a short but defined slope where ground levels change abruptly, survives to a height of between 0.3 and 0.4 metres, which is modest but enough to confirm the structure's presence to a careful observer. The original entrance has been lost entirely, leaving no clear indication of where people once passed in and out of the enclosure. By 1837, when the first edition of the Ordnance Survey six-inch map was published, the site was already recorded simply as a circular enclosure marked "Fort", suggesting it was a recognised feature of the landscape even then, if not fully understood. A field inspection carried out in 1976 confirmed its condition at that point.
