Ringfort (Rath), Creaghadoo, Co. Sligo

On a south-facing slope of mountain pasture in County Sligo, a broad earthen bank traces an oval roughly twenty-seven metres by twenty-five metres.

This is a rath, the Irish term for a ringfort, the most common type of early medieval enclosed settlement in Ireland. What makes the Creaghadoo example quietly interesting is not its scale but its layering: within the same enclosure, two distinct features survive, a hut site and a souterrain, offering a rare glimpse of how a single small farmstead was once organised.

The enclosing bank, some four and a half metres wide though only half a metre high internally, is earthen rather than stone, and notably lacks a fosse, the external ditch that typically accompanies this kind of monument. Whether the fosse was never dug or has simply silted and levelled over time is unclear. At the southern side, a gap of around two and a half metres with a ramp leading outward marks what survives of the original entrance. Rubble stone scattered on the ramp and at the terminals of the bank on either side suggests the entrance was once stone-lined, lending it a slightly more formal character than the earthwork alone implies. A modern drainage cut along the north-east to south-east exterior of the bank is a reminder that agricultural land management has continued to alter the site in recent centuries. Inside, slightly south of centre, the remains of a hut site point to where a structure once stood. To the north-north-west of centre lies a souterrain, an underground passage or chamber, typically stone-built, used in early medieval Ireland for storage or as a place of refuge. The combination of hut site and souterrain within a single rath is a fairly typical arrangement, but seeing both preserved together in upland pasture gives the site a particular coherence.
