Ringfort (Rath), Creggymulgreny, Co. Galway

Some ancient sites are celebrated for what survives.

This one in Creggymulgreny, County Galway, is quietly notable for what has almost entirely disappeared. It is a rath, the Irish term for a ringfort, typically a circular enclosure defined by an earthen bank and ditch, once used as a farmstead or high-status dwelling during the early medieval period. This particular example measures just 17.4 metres in diameter, placing it at the smaller end of the scale, and by the time anyone thought to formally record it, the land had already begun the slow work of reclaiming it.

When surveyors first visited in March 1983, the rath was already in poor condition, its defining bank of earth and stone grassed over and obscured by dense overgrowth. An earlier observer, McCaffrey, writing in 1952, had noted a depression in the northeast quadrant of the interior, which might suggest a souterrain, an underground stone-lined passage sometimes found within ringforts and used for storage or refuge, though no physical trace of it could be confirmed even then. By the time surveyors returned in October 2001, the site had deteriorated further still. Thorns and briars had taken over completely, and the monument was recorded simply as inaccessible. It sits in rough grazing land, which means it has not been built over or ploughed away, but nature, left to its own schedule, has proved almost as effective at erasure.
