Ringfort (Rath), Crosserdree, Co. Westmeath

What survives in Crosserdree, County Westmeath, is essentially the ghost of a monument.

A shallow raised area roughly twenty-five metres across, edged by a low scarp, is all that remains of what was once a rath, the Irish term for a ringfort, the circular earthen enclosures built across Ireland during the early medieval period, typically as enclosed farmsteads for a single family or small community. The site sits on a north-facing slope of a low ridge, with slightly higher ground rising on every side, and the road marking the townland boundary with Tevrin just seventy metres to the west.

The 1838 edition of the Ordnance Survey Fair Plan map recorded it clearly enough, depicting a small oval-shaped earthwork and annotating it simply as a fort. By that point it had survived, in some form, for well over a thousand years. Sometime in the latter half of the nineteenth century, however, local information suggests it was levelled, most likely cleared to improve agricultural land. The timing is consistent with a pattern seen elsewhere in Ireland during and after the Famine years, when the pressure to maximise tillage and grazing led to the destruction of many similar earthworks. The scarp and raised ground that remain are the faint physical memory of that vanished structure, readable in the landscape only if you know to look.
