Ringfort (Rath), Curry, Co. Mayo

In a field of low, rolling pasture south of the Meander River in County Mayo, a subtle rise in the ground marks something that most people walking past would not give a second glance.

What they would be passing is a rath, an early medieval earthen ringfort, the kind of enclosure that once served as a farmstead or defended homestead for a family of some local standing. Thousands of them survive across Ireland in various states of preservation, and this one is a quietly imperfect example, measuring roughly forty metres north to south and thirty-three metres east to west, its enclosing earthen bank still traceable through the vegetation even as it erodes and narrows around the circuit.

The bank, which rises to about 0.7 metres where it survives, runs from the south-west around to the south-east, and there is a possible original entrance on the south-east side, wide enough at just under four metres to have admitted livestock or a loaded cart. A narrower gap on the north-east, roughly 1.8 metres across, may be a later break rather than an intended opening. The interior has not escaped interference: a large portion of the south-west quadrant and its adjoining bank has been quarried away, presumably for material to improve the surrounding land, and a substantial depression sits in the northern part of the interior. This kind of disturbance is common in lowland ringforts, where generations of farmers saw a convenient source of loose earth or stone. The bank that remains is largely overgrown, meaning the outline is more legible on an aerial photograph or a calm winter morning than it would be in high summer.
