Ringfort (Rath), Davros, Co. Mayo

A ringfort that no longer exists above ground is, in one sense, not unusual in Ireland; thousands have been lost to agriculture over the centuries.

What makes the one at Davros in County Mayo quietly arresting is how much of its ghost remains, written into the ordinary-looking farm infrastructure that replaced it. The earthwork was levelled during land reclamation work in the late 1990s, yet when the site was inspected in 2000, the circular outline of its bank was still legible as a cropmark in the surrounding fields, the buried soil chemistry betraying the shape of something that had stood for perhaps a thousand years.

The ringfort, or rath, a type of enclosed farmstead typically associated with the early medieval period in Ireland, sat on a northwest to southeast ridge in level pasture, with open views east towards Carras Lough. It measured roughly 42 metres in diameter, a substantial enclosure. It appears on the 1838 Ordnance Survey six-inch map as a complete circular earthwork, and by the 1915 edition it had already become penannular, meaning the ring was broken, open to the east and bisected by a field boundary. The reclamation work of the late 1990s finished what that boundary had begun. In its place runs a slightly sunken farm track on a northeast to southwest axis. But the bank has not entirely vanished. A section of the southwest arc survives as a rise spanning the full width of the trackway, roughly 12 metres wide and 0.7 metres high. More significantly, a portion of the bank about 5 metres wide and 1.2 metres high has been preserved in cross-section within the field fence on the north side of the track, where the fence was simply built into the old earthwork rather than clearing it. A less defined rise at the northeast end of the track, where it meets a tarred road, may represent the opposite arc. Approximately 15 metres to the north-northwest, there is a possible second enclosure, suggesting this was not an isolated settlement.
