Ringfort (Rath), Derraghan More, Co. Longford

There is nothing to see at Derraghan More, and that, in a way, is precisely the point.

On a south-facing slope of a low ridge in County Longford, where pasture rolls quietly over the land, a ringfort once stood. A rath, to use the Irish term, was typically a circular enclosure defined by an earthen bank and ditch, used as a farmstead or family compound during the early medieval period. Thousands once existed across Ireland; a great many have since been quietly erased by the plough, the bulldozer, and the steady pressure of agricultural improvement.

This particular example appeared on the first edition of the Ordnance Survey six-inch map in 1837, marked with the label 'Fort' and depicted as a circular enclosure. By 1976, the earthworks had already been substantially levelled, though a field investigator at the time could still trace the outline of the perimeter on the ground, enclosing a circular area of roughly 35 metres in diameter. That trace has since disappeared entirely. Further levelling has removed whatever remained visible, and the monument is no longer detectable at ground level.

What makes this site worth noting is not what survives but what the sequence of its disappearance tells us. The 1837 map records it as a legible feature in the landscape. By the late twentieth century it was a ghost of itself, its shape still faintly readable. Now even that is gone. The ridge at Derraghan More still slopes southward, the pasture still grows, but the enclosure that someone once built, lived within, and left behind has been thoroughly returned to the earth.
