Ringforts

Ringfort (Rath), Derreen (Kenry By.), Co. Limerick

There is something quietly disorienting about a monument that survives only as an absence.

On an east-north-east-facing slope in Derreen, in the barony of Kenry in County Limerick, a ringfort once stood that is now visible, if visible is even the right word, as a slight hollow in a pasture field where someone has tipped a load of rubble. The earthwork itself is gone, levelled at some point after it was recorded, and what remains is essentially the ghost of a circular enclosure roughly twenty metres across.

Ringforts, also known as raths, were enclosed farmsteads of the early medieval period, typically defined by one or more earthen banks and ditches, and they number in the tens of thousands across Ireland. This particular example was recorded on the Ordnance Survey six-inch map of 1923 as a circular embanked enclosure, which gives at least a fixed point before which it still existed in recognisable form. The survey notes compiled by Denis Power note that the site sits within a narrow strip of land connecting larger fields to the north and south, and that a slight curve in the dry-stone boundary running from the east-south-east around to the west may itself be following the line of the original enclosure. In other words, the field boundary might be preserving, unconsciously or otherwise, the memory of the monument it replaced.

The site is in pasture and there is little to see beyond the depression and the dumped rubble, but the detail worth attending to is that curving boundary wall. It is the kind of thing that only makes sense once you know what to look for: a dry-stone wall taking an odd, gentle arc where a straight line would serve just as well, hinting at a circular form beneath the modern field pattern. There is no access infrastructure here, and the site is on private farmland, so any visit would require landowner permission. The notes do not record a townland grid reference beyond the general location in Derreen, so identifying the precise field on the ground would take some local knowledge or careful map comparison with the 1923 OS sheet.
