Ringfort (Rath), Derrydarragh, Co. Sligo

In the townland of Derrydarragh in County Sligo, a ringfort sits in the landscape, its earthen banks quietly persisting through centuries of agricultural change, weather, and neglect.

Ringforts, known in Irish as raths, are among the most common archaeological monument types in Ireland, with tens of thousands recorded across the island. They are generally understood as enclosed farmsteads dating from the early medieval period, roughly the fifth to the twelfth centuries, their circular banks and ditches marking out a domestic space for a family and their livestock rather than serving any primarily military function. That so many survive at all is partly because of older folk belief associating them with the fairy world, which made farmers reluctant to disturb them.

The Derrydarragh example carries the straightforward classification of a rath, the earthwork variant of the ringfort type, as distinct from a cashel, which would have stone walls rather than earthen banks. Beyond that classification and its location in this small Sligo townland, the available record is thin. Derrydarragh itself is a quiet corner of a county more often associated with the Megalithic cemetery at Carrowmore or the looming outline of Knocknarea, yet the presence of even an underdocumented ringfort here is a reminder that early medieval settlement was spread across the whole countryside, not concentrated only at the sites that later became famous.
