A circular earthwork roughly 59 metres across sits quietly in the landscape, its stone-faced bank and surrounding fosse, a defensive ditch encircling the exterior, still legible after more than a thousand years. What makes it more than a typical enclosure is what lies underground: a souterrain built into the northern half of the interior. Souterrains are artificial underground passages or chambers, usually constructed from stone, that are found at many early medieval settlement sites across Ireland. Their precise function is still debated, but they are generally thought to have served as places of refuge, cool storage for food, or both.

The earthwork belongs to the class of monument known as a rath, the most common type of enclosed settlement in early medieval Ireland, typically associated with a farming family or small community of some social standing. This particular example was recorded by Cody in 1989, who observed not only the main bank and fosse but also the arc of a very slight outer bank to the north-east, a detail that hints at the possibility of additional, now largely vanished, defensive works. The site remains in fair condition, which for an earthwork of this age, given centuries of agricultural pressure and land improvement, is no small matter.
