Ringfort (Rath), Derrydooan, Co. Westmeath

In the low ridge country of Derrydooan, a roughly oval enclosure sits in working farmland, its earthen bank still legible after what may be well over a thousand years of gradual modification and agricultural encroachment.

The site is a rath, the most common type of early medieval settlement monument in Ireland, typically consisting of a raised circular or oval area enclosed by one or more earthen banks and ditches, and used as a farmstead by a family of some local standing. What makes this particular example quietly interesting is not grandeur but the layering of change written into its fabric.

The enclosure measures approximately 47.6 metres in diameter and retains its external fosse, the defensive ditch cut outside the bank, to a width of 2.4 metres along its best-preserved arc from the east-southeast around to the south-southwest. That arc suggests the site has been treated differently across different parts of its circumference over time. The bank has been largely levelled to the north and east, while elsewhere it appears to have been artificially steepened, both on its inner and outer faces, in relatively recent centuries. A causewayed entrance gap, a deliberate break in the bank with an uncut causeway across the ditch, survives at the north-northwest and measures about two metres across. A second, more recent gap has been made in the southern bank, reflecting later agricultural convenience rather than any original design. Inside, cultivation ridges running east to west hint at periods when the enclosed ground was put to tillage rather than left as a monument, and a modern drain cuts through the fosse to the east. Farm buildings sit immediately to the north, and fencing crosses the site in several places. The rath occupies a low ridge with open views to the southeast, southwest, and northwest, a position that would have been practical for any early farmer keeping an eye on the surrounding countryside.
