Ringfort (Rath), Derrylahan, Co. Cavan

The enclosure measures roughly 68 metres north to south and 67 metres east to west, making it a substantial example of its kind. What gives it an quietly awkward character is the way the modern and the ancient have been spliced together: the outer fosse, the defensive ditch that once separated this domestic enclosure from the wider landscape, has been recut in places and absorbed into the field drainage system along its south-south-west to north-west arc, while elsewhere it has been filled in entirely.

Ringforts, sometimes called raths when they are earthen rather than stone-built, were the most common form of rural settlement in early medieval Ireland, typically serving as enclosed farmsteads for a family and their livestock. The earthen bank and surrounding fosse were less about serious military defence and more about defining a household boundary, controlling livestock, and marking social status. The Derrylahan example follows this familiar pattern, though one detail lifts it slightly out of the ordinary: a gap in the southern bank may represent the original entrance to the enclosure. Such original entrances are not always preserved, and their survival, even as a probable rather than confirmed feature, allows the site to retain at least a trace of its intended shape and logic.
