Ringfort (Rath), Doon, Co. Kerry

A concrete bridge leading into a prehistoric enclosure is not something you encounter every day.

At Doon in north Kerry, a modern crossing spans the fosse of an early medieval ringfort, carrying visitors directly through what was once the only entrance to a settlement that may have stood here well over a thousand years ago. The juxtaposition is quietly jarring, and it sets the tone for a site that rewards closer attention.

A rath is a ringfort, the most common monument type in the Irish landscape, typically a circular enclosure defined by an earthen bank and outer ditch, used as a defended farmstead during the early medieval period. The example at Doon is a univallate rath, meaning it has a single enclosing bank rather than multiple concentric ones, and it is in notably good condition. The bank itself rises to 3.8 metres on its external face and 3 metres above the interior, enclosing a roughly circular space measuring 38 metres north to south and 37 metres east to west. The fosse, the wide ditch that runs around the outside of the bank from the north, around the east, and as far as the south-west, is a metre wide and a metre deep. The southern entrance, 4 metres across, is where that concrete bridge now delivers you into the enclosure. T. J. Westropp, who examined the site in 1909, noted what he believed were two distinct phases of construction visible in the bank's profile: a lower layer of drift clay and an upper layer of light-brown earth sitting above a course of stones one to two feet thick, suggesting the earthwork was built up or modified at different periods.

The rath sits to the south-east of a disused Roman Catholic church at Doon, and the elevated position of the site gives a wide view across the surrounding countryside, the kind of vantage point that would have made practical sense to whoever originally chose this ground.
