Ringforts
Along the western edge of the Loop Head Peninsula in County Clare, near the small coastal settlement of Doonaha, there survives a ringfort, or rath, of the kind that once dotted nearly every townland in Ireland.
These roughly circular enclosures, typically defined by one or more earthen banks and ditches, were the farmsteads of early medieval Ireland, occupied broadly between the fifth and twelfth centuries. Thousands remain visible across the Irish landscape, yet each one represents a particular family, a particular patch of ground, a particular set of choices about where and how to live. This one, sitting quietly in the Clare countryside close to the Shannon estuary, is easy to pass without a second glance.
