Ringfort (Rath), Drinaghan More, Co. Sligo

In a stretch of poorly-drained pasture in Drinaghan More, County Sligo, a low circular rise in the ground marks something that most people walking past would not immediately identify as a constructed feature at all.

It is a rath, a type of ringfort built from earth rather than stone, and what survives here is quietly legible once you know what to look for: a raised platform roughly 28.7 metres in diameter, ringed by an earthen bank that stands up to 1.6 metres on its outer face.

Ringforts are among the most common archaeological monument types in Ireland, with tens of thousands recorded across the country. They functioned primarily as enclosed farmsteads during the early medieval period, roughly the fifth to twelfth centuries, and a rath specifically refers to one defined by an earthen bank and ditch rather than a stone wall. The example at Drinaghan More preserves several features that allow its original layout to be read with some confidence. The enclosing bank varies between 4.8 and 5.5 metres in width, and a gap of around 2 metres on the eastern side marks what appears to be the original entrance, a common orientation in Irish ringforts, possibly aligned with the rising sun or simply reflecting prevailing wind patterns. Against the inner face of the bank on the north-eastern arc sits a shallow hollow measuring approximately 4 metres by 2 metres and only 0.3 metres deep. Features like this, set against interior bank faces, are sometimes interpreted as the remains of small outbuildings or storage areas, though without excavation it is impossible to say with certainty what this one held or how it was used.

The site sits on a gentle east-facing slope, which would have offered its inhabitants a degree of natural drainage away from the enclosed interior, a practical consideration in ground that remains poorly drained today. The earthworks are low and unspectacular by any dramatic measure, but their survival in readable condition across more than a thousand years in wet Connacht pasture is, in its own way, quite remarkable.
