Ringfort (Rath), Dromadeesirt, Co. Kerry

In a Kerry pasture, a circular earthwork roughly 36 metres across sits on a gentle west-facing slope, its bank partly buried under dumped field clearance and its interior swallowed by trees and undergrowth.

This is a rath, the Irish term for a ringfort, the most common monument type in the Irish landscape. Built predominantly during the early medieval period, roughly 500 to 1000 AD, raths were enclosed farmsteads, their encircling banks and ditches marking out a family's living and working space rather than serving any serious military purpose. This one in Dromadeesirt has largely been left to its own slow decline, which is itself rather typical of the type.

The enclosure is defined by an earth and stone bank, some 4.4 metres wide, with internal stone-facing still visible along the south-eastern arc. Outside the bank, a fosse, or defensive ditch, runs from the north-east around to the south-east, roughly 3.3 metres wide and 0.65 metres deep where it can still be measured. A drystone wall, incorporating large boulders, skirts the outer edge of that fosse along the same arc, adding an extra layer of boundary that speaks to considerable original effort in construction. The bank has been worn down in places, and rubble from subsequent generations of farming has been tipped against its outer face between the west and north-east. None of this is unusual for a site that has been sitting in working farmland for over a millennium. What does give the site a degree of quiet interest is the proximity of a second rath lying roughly 200 metres to the east, suggesting this was once a more densely settled corner of the landscape than its current pastoral stillness would imply.
