Ringfort (Rath), Dromgower, Co. Kerry

What looks at first like a raised grassy field in North Kerry turns out, on closer inspection, to be a site of considerable complexity.

The ringfort at Dromgower is a univallate example, meaning it has a single enclosing bank rather than the multiple concentric rings found at more elaborate sites, but the interior tells a more intricate story than that single boundary suggests. The enclosing bank of earth and stone, roughly 7 metres wide at its base and rising up to 1.7 metres above the surrounding ground, defines a large circular area approximately 41 metres across. Within that space, a series of semi-circular mounds, small ridges, and depressions hint at structures that no longer stand above ground.

The most intriguing detail lies in what those internal features might represent. In the north-east to east portion of the interior, two semi-circular mounds curve inwards towards the bank, and extending from a small mound nearby is a depression about 3.8 metres wide that curves northward for some 10 metres, with drystone walling still visible. These elements are consistent with the remains of a souterrain, an underground passageway or storage chamber of the kind commonly built within early medieval ringforts, used variously for food storage, refuge, or both. The 1842 Ordnance Survey map marks the spot as a "cave", which suggests the feature was still recognisable, or at least remembered locally, in the mid-nineteenth century. A large semi-circular enclosure in the south-west sector of the interior adds further complexity, possibly with its own opening to the north-west where the bank shows a slight break. A probable entrance of around 4 metres wide faces south-west. The site was recorded in detail by C. Toal in the North Kerry Archaeological Survey, published in 1995.
