Ringfort (Rath), Drumcorrabaun, Co. Mayo

In the townland of Drumcorrabaun in County Mayo, a ringfort sits in the landscape, its earthen banks quietly outlasting the people who raised them.

A rath, as this type of monument is commonly known, is a roughly circular enclosure defined by one or more banks and ditches, built predominantly during the early medieval period, roughly between the fifth and twelfth centuries. They served as farmsteads, the defended homesteads of farming families, and thousands of them survive across Ireland in varying states of preservation. What makes any individual example worth pausing over is precisely that ordinariness, the sense that this was not a seat of power or a place of ceremony, but simply where someone lived.

Drumcorrabaun is a quiet Mayo townland, and the ringfort it contains has not yet been the subject of detailed published documentation. The historical record for this particular site remains thin, which is not unusual for the more numerous and less architecturally dramatic class of early medieval enclosure. Without excavation, it is rarely possible to say who built a given rath, when precisely it was in use, or what everyday life within its banks looked like. That absence of detail is, in its own way, part of the story. The majority of Ireland's estimated forty to fifty thousand ringforts have never been excavated, and many remain known only as features on a map or a slight rise in a field.
