Ringfort (Rath), Drumcorrabaun, Co. Mayo

In the townland of Drumcorrabaun in County Mayo, a ringfort sits in the landscape, its earthen banks quietly holding their shape after more than a thousand years.

These circular enclosures, known in Irish as raths, were the everyday settlements of early medieval farming families, typically dating from around the fifth to the twelfth century. A bank of earth, sometimes reinforced with a ditch, marked the boundary of a farmstead and offered a degree of protection for livestock. They are among the most common archaeological monument types in Ireland, with tens of thousands recorded across the country, yet each one occupies a specific patch of ground with its own particular history, and most of that history remains unwritten.

Drumcorrabaun is a small townland in Mayo, and beyond its name and the confirmed presence of this rath, detailed recorded information about the site has not yet been made publicly available. What can be said generally is that Mayo's landscape holds a significant number of these enclosures, many of them still visible as low earthen rings in fields that have been farmed continuously in the centuries since they were first built. The name Drumcorrabaun itself is likely derived from Irish, with "Droim" suggesting a ridge or long low hill, which is precisely the kind of elevated ground early farmers favoured when choosing where to build a defended homestead, offering both drainage and visibility across the surrounding land.
