Ringfort (Rath), Drumreagh, Co. Wicklow

Most ringforts in Ireland announce themselves with a commanding view, placed on high ground where a farmer or chieftain could survey their land.

The rath at Drumreagh takes a different approach. It sits towards the foot of a gentle westward-facing slope, with the near-vertical walls of Hollywood Glen rising just seventy metres to its west. It is a modest structure, a roughly circular enclosure twenty-one metres across, defined by an earthen bank and an external fosse, the shallow ditch that would once have reinforced the bank's defensive or symbolic purpose. The bank itself stands less than a metre above the interior, and the fosse has silted to a depth of only about thirty centimetres, but the form is still legible in the ground.

Ringforts, known in Irish as raths when built from earth rather than stone, were the dominant settlement type across early medieval Ireland, roughly from the fifth to the twelfth centuries. They served primarily as enclosed farmsteads, the bank and fosse marking out a household's space and livestock rather than defending against any serious military threat. What makes the Drumreagh example quietly interesting is not the rath itself but its relationship to the landscape. Surveyors recorded no trace of an entrance or any internal features within the enclosure, which leaves its orientation and use somewhat open. More striking is that a second ringfort occupies a near-identical position on the opposite side of Hollywood Glen, approximately two hundred and fifty metres to the northwest. The two sit like mirror images, each tucked against the same dramatic natural feature from opposite flanks, though whether this pairing reflects deliberate settlement planning, a shared period of occupation, or simple coincidence in choosing sheltered ground is not something the earthworks themselves can answer.
