Ringfort (Rath), Edmondstown, Co. Westmeath

A low, roughly oval earthwork sitting on a gentle rise in County Westmeath's pastureland might not immediately declare itself as anything extraordinary, yet this rath at Edmondstown carries the compressed biography of a millennium or more of Irish rural life within its battered banks.

A rath, or ringfort, is a roughly circular enclosure defined by an earthen bank and, typically, an external ditch, and was the standard form of farmstead in early medieval Ireland, used by farming families for settlement and as an enclosure for livestock. Thousands survive across the island in varying states of repair, and this one sits quietly among them.

When the monument was measured and described between 1970 and 1972, the enclosing bank formed a subcircular area roughly 31.6 metres across west-northwest to east-southeast and 28 metres in the perpendicular direction. The bank itself was substantial in places, reaching an external height of 1.5 metres, though its top had narrowed to around 0.4 metres wide. It was already showing the damage that would become its defining characteristic: quarrying activity had eaten into the northern arc from the north-northwest through to the northeast, leaving that section considerably disturbed. A portion of a modern field boundary running roughly east-west had also been absorbed into the southern side of the enclosure, blurring the line between ancient monument and working farmland. No original entrance was identifiable, and there was no surviving external fosse, the ditch that would once have run around the outside of the bank and whose absence here may reflect either later disturbance or an original variation in construction. The interior slopes gently southward and contained modern earthen mounds at the time of description. The 1913 edition of the Ordnance Survey twenty-five inch map had already recorded the earthwork, depicting it as an oval-shaped feature, suggesting its outline was still legible more than a century ago despite the pressures closing in around it.
