Ringfort (Rath), Faha Demesne, Co. Limerick

Somewhere in the fields of County Limerick, a circular earthwork sits quietly within what was once a deer park, its origins separated from its surroundings by roughly a thousand years.

The ringfort predates the genteel landscaping of Faha House by an enormous margin, yet the two have ended up sharing the same stretch of ground, the ancient enclosure absorbed into the estate's 'Old Deer Park' without ceremony or acknowledgement. That kind of overlap, where early medieval agriculture and later Anglo-Irish land management occupy the same field without quite noticing each other, is more common in Ireland than one might expect, but it rarely feels any less odd for that.

A ringfort, or rath, is one of the most widespread monument types in Ireland, typically dating from the early medieval period, roughly 500 to 1000 AD. They functioned as enclosed farmsteads, the earthen bank and outer ditch, known as a fosse, providing a degree of security for a family and their livestock rather than any serious military defence. This particular example measures 36 metres in diameter. Its enclosing bank survives to an internal height of 0.45 metres and an external height of 1.1 metres, with a base width of just over six metres. The external fosse, measuring 2.1 metres at its base, is best preserved along the arc running from north-northeast through east to south-southeast. An entrance gap, six metres wide, opens to the northwest. Later field boundaries cut across the enclosure at the northeast and southwest, which is a reminder that subsequent generations of farmers were not always inclined to work around what they found in the ground. Faha House itself lies approximately 980 metres to the northeast.

Access to this kind of monument is typically a matter of negotiating farmland, and the site sits in pasture on a gentle northwest-facing slope. The interior is described as densely overgrown, so close inspection is likely to be limited to the earthworks themselves rather than anything within. The bank and fosse are the main things to look for, particularly along the eastern arc where they are most intact. The site is visible as a tree-covered earthwork on satellite imagery, which makes it identifiable from above even when ground-level vegetation makes it harder to read. The survey was compiled by Martin Fitzpatrick and uploaded in June 2020.
