This is a rath, the commonest type of ringfort found across Ireland, a form of enclosed farmstead typical of the early medieval period, roughly 500 to 1200 AD. Where many have been ploughed out or levelled entirely, this one retains enough of its original geometry to reward a careful eye.

The site measures roughly 28 metres east to west and 27 metres north to south, making it a modestly sized but well-preserved example. A substantial earthen bank, over eight metres wide in places, defines the northern and eastern arc of the enclosure, while elsewhere the boundary takes the form of a scarp, a near-vertical cut face rather than a built-up bank, rising to around 1.65 metres. Outside this, a fosse, the technical term for a ditch dug to accompany a defensive or boundary bank, runs along the north-eastern to south-eastern stretch, still 3.2 metres wide and 0.6 metres deep where it survives. In other sections the fosse has been infilled over time, though its outline, approximately 3.5 metres across, remains traceable in the ground. The original entrance survives as a five-metre gap in the eastern bank, complete with a causeway that would have carried foot and animal traffic across the ditch. Inside the enclosure, a length of drystone walling, built without mortar in the traditional manner, runs across the north-western quadrant, aligned roughly north-east to south-west. Whether this is a later subdivision of the interior or a remnant of an original internal structure is not recorded, but its presence adds a small puzzle to an otherwise readable site.
