Ringfort (Rath), Flean Beg, Co. Limerick

At Flean Beg in County Limerick, the ground holds the ghost of a structure that most visitors would walk straight across without a second thought.

What was once a clearly defined embanked enclosure is now little more than a shallow swell in a pasture field, its original form surviving only in an old map and in the faint logic of the earth itself.

A ringfort, or rath, is a roughly circular enclosure defined by one or more earthen banks and ditches, typically built during the early medieval period as a farmstead for a single family and their livestock. The example at Flean Beg was recorded on the Ordnance Survey six-inch map of 1923 as a circular embanked enclosure with a diameter of approximately twenty metres. At some point after that survey, the monument was levelled and the surrounding field boundaries removed. What Denis Power documented and uploaded to record in August 2011 is considerably humbler: a low, broad rise roughly eight metres wide and no more than fifteen centimetres high, enclosing an oval area measuring about thirty metres north to south and twenty-two metres east to west. The slight distortion from circle to oval is likely a consequence of the levelling rather than original design.

The site sits on a gentle rise within undulating pasture, which is itself a clue worth noting. Ringforts were routinely placed on modest high points for drainage and visibility, so the topography here is consistent with what the original builders would have chosen. There is nothing to mark the location, and without prior knowledge of its position, the low rise is easily mistaken for a natural feature of the ground. Those who do seek it out should go in low winter light or in dry summer conditions when shadows and crop variation in the grass can make slight earthworks more legible to the eye.
