Ringfort (Rath), Fontstown, Co. Kildare

Half a ringfort is, in one sense, no ringfort at all, yet the surviving earthworks at Fontstown in County Kildare make a quietly compelling case for what endures when a road and a driveway cut clean through an early medieval enclosure. Only the eastern half of what was once a circular rath remains legible on the ground, the western portion long since absorbed into the infrastructure of a working property.

A rath is an earthen ringfort, the most common type of early medieval settlement in Ireland, typically enclosing a farmstead or the residence of a person of some local standing. This particular example originally measured around 32 metres in diameter on a north-south axis, set on a moderately steep south-west-facing pasture slope. What survives is an overgrown earthen bank running from north around to south-south-east, standing about 0.6 metres above the interior surface and just over a metre high on its outer face, with a width of roughly 4.6 metres. Traces of a shallow outer fosse, a defensive ditch that would once have reinforced the bank, can still be made out at the north-east and south-east, though it is only around 0.4 metres deep and 3 metres wide where it remains. The monument has been cut through on a north-east to south-west line by a road, and a broad driveway at the south has further compromised the original circuit.

The interior of what remains has been incorporated into the domestic landscape of the property, now lawned and hedged. It is a common fate for ringforts across Ireland, where centuries of agricultural and infrastructural change have reduced, divided, or absorbed hundreds of similar sites. What is somewhat unusual here is how clearly the truncation can be read, the abrupt termination of the bank at each end marking exactly where the modern world interrupted something that had stood, more or less intact, for well over a thousand years.
