Ringfort (Rath), Fountainhill, Co. Mayo

A rath, or ringfort, the most common type of enclosed settlement in early medieval Ireland, typically announces itself as a clear circular earthwork rising from farmland.

This one at Fountainhill does the opposite. Sitting on a north-west-facing terrace on a low hill in County Mayo, it has been so thoroughly reduced over time that it never appears on any edition of the Ordnance Survey six-inch maps, the standard cartographic record for Irish field monuments. It was, in other words, already too faint to register when those maps were being drawn, and it remains that way today, a subcircular area roughly 38 metres north to south and 41 metres east to west, its defining bank worn down to little more than a broad, low undulation across the ground.

What survives tells you just enough to read the original shape. On the south-east to south-west arc, the bank persists as an inward-sloping scarp about 0.7 metres high, cutting across the rising hill slope, and stones protrude from the sod at intervals around the perimeter. On the west and east sides, the bank has effectively dissolved into the natural fall of the terrace, which drops 1.7 metres to lower ground at the north-west. A low, slightly wider break on the eastern perimeter, with a gentle external slope, may represent the original entrance gap. A second, less well-defined break at the south-west could be another. Inside the north-west quadrant, a short curved scarp barely 0.45 metres high arcs across roughly seven metres, with a large stone or exposed bedrock at its northern end, marking a step down in the interior ground level. It is a modest detail, but it gives the interior a faint topographical memory. The rath does not stand alone in this landscape: two further enclosures lie 225 metres and 350 metres to the south-east and east, and Kilkeeran church with its associated ecclesiastical enclosure sits about 450 metres to the west, suggesting this low hill once sat within a relatively busy early medieval neighbourhood.
