Ringfort (Rath), Garrankeel, Co. Mayo

In the level pasture of Garrankeel in County Mayo, a low swelling in the ground is all that remains of what was once a circular earthwork enclosure.

It is the kind of presence that would pass unnoticed by most people walking past, and that is precisely what makes it worth pausing over. The land has absorbed the monument almost entirely, leaving only a broad, gentle rise to mark where it once stood.

A rath, for those unfamiliar with the term, is a ringfort, an enclosed circular settlement typically built during the early medieval period in Ireland, usually defined by one or more earthen banks and ditches. The Garrankeel example was recorded on the Ordnance Survey six-inch map of 1837 as a circular ringfort-like enclosure, and appeared again on the later twenty-five-inch plan as a circular hachured enclosure with a diameter of approximately twenty-seven metres. By the time the revised six-inch map was produced in 1930, it had vanished from the cartographic record entirely, indicating that the levelling of the site had taken place somewhere in the intervening decades. The OS maps, produced in successive waves of survey across the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, provide one of the most reliable tools for tracking the disappearance of monuments like this one, and the gap between the 1837 and 1930 editions is telling. What survives now is not a monument in any conventional sense but a kind of negative impression, a place where the ground simply sits a little higher than it should.
